About the Fractal Image (Artistic):

Dragons figure prominently in Chinese culture, and can be found adorning paintings, sculpture, jewelry, clothing, and pottery. The dragon is even one of the signs of the Chinese zodiac. Almost invariably, Chinese dragons are shown to be long, thin creatures whose serpentine bodies are coiled into mesmerizing shapes. Admittedly, my exposure to this Chinese icon has been predominantly through gazing at the wall decorations and at the place mats while waiting for dinner to be delivered to the table. Even so, I thought the similarity of this fractal to those Chinese restaurant dragons to be quite striking.

About the Fractal Image (Technical):

The "Chinese Dragons" fractal is one of the Mandelbrot type or Type M example fractals. Type M fractals are infinitely detailed (literally) and are interesting for the patterns formed by the filaments, especially at high magnification. The Chinese Dragons fractal is a portion of the Mandelbrot fractal shown at a magnification of 20,000X, and is closely related to the fractals Diana’s Pinwheels and Melting. The fractals’ interior regions are colored monochromatic red to hide any interior structure. The same red is used for the accent color of the fractals’ exterior regions. This purposely blurs the distinction between fractals’ interior and exterior and gives the image a soft, smoky appearance.
