About the Fractal Image (Artistic):

What is a heptagon? You know that a six-sided object is a hexagon, and that an eight-sided object is an octagon. Well, a seven-sided object is a heptagon. The central fractal in the image has seven primary arms or branches - hence the fractals' name.

About the Fractal Image (Technical):

The "Heptagon" fractal is one of the Mandelbrot type or Type M example fractals. Type M fractals are infinitely detailed (literally) and are interesting for the patterns formed by the filaments, especially at high magnification. The Heptagon fractal is a portion of the Mandelbrot fractal shown at a magnification of 10,000,000,000X. At this magnification, the original fractal image (magnification = 1X) has been enlarged to about twice the diameter of the Sun!

Aside from the particularly high magnification, the Heptagon fractal is also unusual for its coloration. Most example fractals use but two key colors for the exterior and often a single, monochromatic color for the interior color. The Heptagon fractal uses seven key colors for the exterior (the maximum), spanning the full color spectrum (rainbow). Although only two key colors are used for the fractals' interior (purple and black), three color cycles are used in conjunction with the "calculated" interior shading scheme to fully highlight the structure of the fractals' interior.
