About the Fractal Image (Artistic):

The 60's were the decade of flower children (hippies), love beads, posters, psychedelic music, and the peace sign. And you simply could not "make the scene" unless you were wearing a tie-dyed T-shirt. These brightly colored garments were made by starting with a white cotton T-shirt. The shirt was wadded up, tied in knots, and then dipped in a vat of brightly colored dye (hence the name "tie dye"). The dye would only penetrate the loose material; it couldn't penetrate the material tightly bound within the knots. By repeatedly tying the shirt and dying it in different colors, some very amazing, unique, and colorful patterns were created. Although they didn't know it at the time, these were attempts to create fractals. The "Tie Dye" fractal is very reminiscent of those brightly colored T-shirts; undoubtedly, this fractal would have been a big seller at protest rallies!

About the Fractal Image (Technical):

The "Tie Dye" fractal is one of the Mandelbrot type or Type M example fractals. Type M fractals are infinitely detailed (literally) and are interesting for the patterns formed by the filaments, especially at high magnification. The Tie Dye fractal is a portion of the Mandelbrot fractal shown at a magnification of about 1,000,000X. At this magnification, the original fractal image (magnification = 1X) has been enlarged to about 150 miles wide!

Most example fractals use but two key colors for the exterior and often a single, monochromatic color for the interior color. The Tie Dye fractal uses three key colors for the exterior, and three key colors for the interior. The psychedelic coloration is further enhanced by the use of two color cycles in the exterior and three color cycles in the interior.
