About the Fractal Movie (Artistic):
As a boy, I tried to learn the constellations and how to find them in the night sky. I only learned a few - Ursa Major or the Big Bear (better known as the Big Dipper) and Orion, the hunter. It was hard to learn the constellations because the celestial stick figures looked very little like the animals or people they were supposed to be. Seeing those pictures in the night sky required a very good imagination, indeed.
The swirling fractal dust seen in the first part of this movie reminded me of stars moving through the night sky. About halfway through the movie - for a brief moment - the dust-like fractals solidify into solid shapes. It is fleeting as the solid shapes quickly turn back into dust. It occurred to me that it would have been a lot easier to learn the constellations if the real stars did the same thing.
About the Fractal Movie (Technical):
The fractals in this movie are Julia-type fractals. Julia fractals are more interesting for their overall shape than for their details at high magnification: the screen images are at a magnification of only 2.5X.
Motion in the movie is achieved by continuously varying the fractal’s kernel; all other parameters are constant. When the value of the kernel is outside a boundary of certain values, there is no fractal “solution” - that is to say that the resulting fractals are “dust like” rather than “solid” (mathematically speaking, “Cantor dust”). For most of the movie, the kernel is outside the boundary and the fractals are just dust. However, mid-way through the movie the kernel crosses the boundary and the fractals become solid. It is only for a short while as the kernel soon crosses the boundary again and the fractals return to dust. |
