About the Fractal Movie (Artistic):
The fractal movie Melting is named for the visual effect the movie employs.
In cold climates near bodies of water, conditions are sometimes right to produce a special type of frost known as hoar frost. When this happens, delicate needles of ice grow from any exposed surface such that it looks to be covered with a thick layer of cotton or fur. Growth can be to such an extent that the holes in chain link fences "heal" themselves - the fence becoming a solid wall of white. Twigs on tree branches can grow up to 100 times their normal diameter. When this happens, all details of the underlying structure are lost to the eye. But hoar frost is extremely fragile. The least bit of sunlight will cause it to melt right before your eyes. As it vanishes, the details of the underlying structure are slowly revealed. That is what the fractal movie "Melting" reminds me of hoar frost melting to reveal the detailed fractal below.
About the Fractal Movie (Technical):
In the fractal movie "Melting", the fractals' image magnifications and image centers are constant throughout the movie; only the fractals' iteration thresholds vary, giving the illusion of motion. The fractals' interior regions (orange areas) are monochromatic. When a monochromatic interior is used, the iteration threshold determines how much of the fractals' underlying details are revealed. The movie begins with a low iteration threshold of 40; at this value, the fractals' interior region is swelled, obliterating any detail and almost filling the screen. As the movie progresses, the iteration threshold slowly increases to a final value of 150. As it does, the interior region shrinks, revealing the detailed, hard-core structure within. The fractal movie "Melting" is a portion of the Mandelbrot fractal at a magnification of 1500. Viewers may recognize the spiral arms featured in this movie as the same spiral arms that appear in the movie "Pinwheels". |
