About the Fractal Movie (Artistic):
When I first created the movie, "Beating Heart", I used a much longer run time. The nondescript fractal appeared to melt on-screen, slowly revealing the famous Mandelbrot "bug" hidden within. I was playing with some of the image parameters when I inadvertently made a movie with a very short, 1-second run time (the default at the time). When I subsequently played the short movie in the Windows Media Player, which happened to be set to auto repeat, I was quite pleased to find the sequence of fractals looked like a beating heart. The visual imagery was so strong that, even without a sound track, I could "hear" the heartbeats when watching the movie.
About the Fractal Movie (Technical):
This movie is the Mandelbrot fractal at a magnification of 2X. The image center, fractal kernel, and magnification are constant throughout the movie. The fractal employs the “Sun” stock color scheme, which has a monochromatic interior. With a monochromatic interior, the iteration threshold determines the level of detail visible in the fractal. Motion is achieved simply by changing the value of the iteration threshold – sweeping from a low value of 10 to a high value of 200. At the lower values of iteration threshold, the fractals swell and all details of their shape are lost. As the value of iteration threshold increases, the fractals quickly shrink, revealing details of the Mandelbrot “bug”. When played repeatedly with a 1-second cycle time, the swelling and shrinking of the fractals give the appearance of a beating heart. |
